Syamal Roy holds a Ph.D. in biochemistry and trained as an immunologist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, USA. He was the chief scientist with the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (IICB), Kolkata, India, and Former Vice Chancellor Coochbehar Panchanan Barma University (WB), India. His major research interests are immunology of infectious diseases and vaccine development. He had served as an external member of the European Vaccine Initiatives on Leishmaniasis. The current focus of his research continues infectious diseases with an emphasis on COVID-19 and serving as an emeritus scientist with the Indian Council of Medical Research at IICB, Kolkata.
